FLIP BOOK

ABSTRACT

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Purpose: Animation Exploration | Duration: 4 Days (2023) | Software: Filmora, Stop Motion Studio

This project explored the relationship between sound and motion through a hand-drawn flipbook animation composed entirely of abstract shapes. Each frame was designed to visually sync with “Shanghai” by King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, translating its rhythm, melody, and tempo into movement and form.

The brief required the animation to be created solely with abstract shapes while exploring key motion instances, expand, contract, bounce and applying design principles to maintain strong visual composition. The exercise became a study in visual rhythm, how motion and sound can harmonize without relying on character or narrative, while also learning to sync and evenly space frames to ensure the animation flowed seamlessly.

SUPPLEMENTARY

This part of the project began with constructing a character model using everyday materials, with the brief requiring one exaggerated feature that would drive both personality and movement. The challenge was to design a form that could physically function in stop motion while still feeling playful and expressive.

After building the model, we animated it through a short sequence that showcased its exaggerated trait, experimenting with how physical limitations and hand-crafted details influence motion. The exercise became a study in how character, materiality, and movement intersect using simple objects to create lively, believable animation.
